God Bless Your Black Heart opens with one of The Paper Chase’s signature songs, “Said The Spider To The Fly,” which immediately introduces the album’s central themes of religion, morality, jealousy, vengeance, and malcontent.

This song is commonly thought to be about Jeffrey Dahmer, but John Congleton has explicitly denied this on Twitter. However, the sample at the end of this song actually comes from the testimony of Tracy Edwards at Jeffrey Dahmer’s trial, and many other details of this song (e.g. “I want your head/I want your wicked parts”) line up very well with Dahmer’s crimes.

This apparent contradiction is best resolved by the assumption that John took inspiration from Jeffrey Dahmer and other serial killers (e.g. John Wayne Gacy, who is sampled on “Ready, Willing, Cain and Able”), but did not write this song directly about them or from their perspectives.

The lyrics appear to tell of a man who’s suffering from a drug addiction, likely amphetamines, and is casting away that part of himself. He will never surrender to the cravings of his addiction ever again, and that’s the purpose of the tagline : NEVER SURRENDER!
